Voter Registration in Illinois

In order to register to vote, you must meet these qualifications:

  • You must be a United States citizen
  • You must be at least 18 years old on or before the next election (OR for a General Primary, must be 17 and will be 18 by the General Election)
  • You must live in your election precinct at least 30 days before the next election
  • You must not currently convicted and serving a sentence
  • You cannot claim the right to vote anywhere else

You must register at least 28 days prior to an election in order to vote in that election. You can register online, by mail, or in person. Following the close of registration, Illinois allows for "Grace Period" Registration and Voting beginning the 27 day prior until the day before an election. Online registration is available through the 15th day prior to Election Day.

To register electronically you must provide:

  • Your Illinois Drivers License number or Illinois Secretary of State issued State ID number.
  • Date the license or ID was issued.
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number.
  • Your birth date.

To register in person you must provide:

  • Two (2) forms of identification with you, one of which must have your correct name and address on it. Both forms of identification must be physical - an ID card, a printed bill, etc.
  • You do not need a photo ID to register. 

You can register in person at local City, Village, or Township Halls in DuPage County or at the Election Division's office in Wheaton in addition to some local libraries. Elmhurst University hosts several voter registration events on campus.

Important Dates

Important Dates - General Election 2024 (Illinois)

  • Thursday, September 26, 2024 to Monday, November 4, 2024: Early voting at assorted sites throughout the state of Illinois
  • Thursday, September 26, 2024: First day to file an application for a vote by mail ballot with the Election Authority
  • Monday, October 7, 2024: Last day to register to vote in person
  • Sunday, October 20, 2024: Last day for online voter registration.
  • Monday, October 31, 2024: Requests to vote by mail must be received by the Election Authority
  • Tuesday, November 5, 2024: General Election - Vote in person at voting sites in Illinois from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Illinois residents may register to vote and provisionally vote on Election Day.

What if I'm from another state?

If you decide to transfer your voter registration OR register to vote in Illinois, please come to a voter registration event listed above and bring two forms of identification, one of which must include your Illinois address.
