ENG 106 Composition II

Scholarship as conversation

"Scholarship as Conversation" is a fancy way of saying that everything that researchers (including you!) are writing and saying about a topic is one big conversation.

That's not to say that everyone is saying the exact same thing. As you'll discover in your research, each topic creates many different conversations.

For example, let's say your topic is social media and teens. There are multiple conversations happening around this topic, including:

  • the impact of social media on teenagers' sleep habits
  • the impact of social media on teenagers' success in school
  • the impact of social media on teenagers' mental health
    • depression and anxiety tied to social media use
    • social media use and eating disorders

Learning what conversations are happening around your topic is another way to help you narrow your topic and move closer to creating a solid research question.
